Combined NGT Course
Per system leadership and in response to recent safety events, the Combined (Adult + Peds) NGT Course is required for all incoming interns with inpatient responsibilities who may need to insert nasogastric tubes within their practice. The goals for this course include:
- Demonstrate the knowledge and technical skills necessary to safely manage adult and pediatric patients who need NGT insertion as part of the care plan
- Reduce complication from misplaced and mismanaged NGTs in adult and pediatric patients
Target Audience
All new clinical trainees (incoming GME interns) entering Geisinger Health System who care for both adult and pediatric patients and who may need to insert nasogastric tubes within their practice.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to...
- identify indications and contraindications for placement of NGT in adult and pediatric patients.
- demonstrate proper NGT placement in adult and pediatric patients in a simulated environment.
- identify NGT placement complications in adult and pediatric patients.
- interpret NGT placement on radiographic images in adult and pediatric patients.
