Physician Licensure Renewal, MD Expiration December 31, 2026/DO Expiration October 31, 2026

Physicians….

As a reminder, by law, failure to renew your license by these deadlines would make you unable to work as of November 1 for osteopathic physicians and January 1 for allopathic physicians.  This is particularly important for the December 31 deadline as this falls between Christmas and New Years.  Everyone is urged to complete their renewal at their earliest possible convenience.

DISCLAIMER: It is the physician’s responsibility to understand the requirements of the applicable association, state and/or specialty and adhere to them precisely. In addition, it is the physician’s responsibility to verify the type of credit awarded by looking in the course brochure, flyer, advertisement, handout, etc. for the applicable accreditation statement.

Information from Geisinger Continuing Education…

Patient Safety and Risk Management

✔  The Continuing Education office is not required to designate patient safety and/or risk management credit.

✔  Patient safety and/or risk management credits are self-designated by the physician.

According to Pennsylvania licensure requirements, patient safety or risk management credit hours may be earned through either Category 1 or Category 2 continuing medical education activities: If a physician earns Category 1 credit in a patient safety or risk management topic, those hours may be applied toward both the Category 1 CME requirement and the patient safety/risk management requirement.

The following list of topics that will satisfy the patient safety/risk management requirement:

  • Improving medical records and record keeping
  • Reducing medical errors
  • Professional conduct and ethics
  • Interprofessional communication
  • Physician-patient communication
  • Preventive medicine education
  • Healthcare quality improvement

If a Continuing Education activity falls within these topics, you can count it toward the patient safety/risk management requirement. The activity does not have to state “patient safety” or “risk management”.
