Congratulations on matching to a residency program at Geisinger! The Nasogastric Tube (NGT) Course, offered by the Clinical Simulation Program (CSP) within the Center for Faculty and Professional Development, supports Geisinger's core value of "Making better health easier." This course aims to change healthcare for the better by educating and training the next generation of providers. Through a standardized approach to simulation-based education and assessment, we seek to ensure that our learners demonstrate a baseline level of knowledge and technical skills needed for safe nasogastric tube insertion.
Goals:
- Demonstrate the knowledge and technical skills necessary to safely manage patients who need NGT insertion as part of the care plan.
- Reduce complications from misplaced/mismanaged NGT.
Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to...
- identify indications and contraindications for placement of NGT.
- demonstrate proper NGT placement in a simulated environment.
- identify NGT placement complications.
- interpret NGT placement on radiographic images.
Outline:
- Prework to be completed by the learner prior to their scheduled in-person skills session.
- In-person session will be scheduled and completed at the GEMS Center.
Target Audience
The Nasogastric Tube Course is required for incoming resident learners in the programs listed below. There are three versions of the course: Adult NGT, Pediatric NGT, and Combined (Adult + Peds) NGT. Please complete the version your program is listed under.
