Diffusion of Innovation, Evidence-Based Clinical Practice and Continuing Medical Education

Enduring - This is a virtual, asynchronous educational session that is part of the Center for Faculty and Professional Development’s Foundations in Health Systems Science series.

Healthcare delivery science education (HDSE) is increasingly needed by physicians balancing clinical care, practice management, and leadership responsibilities in their daily lives. Continuing professional development initiatives can empower health professionals to optimize strategic and system-focused educational roles and responsibilities.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, pharmacists, nurses, advanced practitioners, and all health professions educators across the Geisinger system.  Other learner groups such as residents and fellows, non-clinician educators, program administrators, program Organizers and directors would also benefit from this education.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Define the concept of "care gaps" in current clinical practice
  • Identify barriers & facilitators in translating the best clinical evidence into daily practice
  • Describe the components of the Diffusion of Innovation Curve & how they may apply in health care
  • Explain evolving education strategies aimed to accelerate the adoption of evidence-based treatments in clinical practice
