Adult NGT Course

Per system leadership and in response to recent safety events, the Adult NGT Course is required for all incoming interns with inpatient responsibilities who may need to insert nasogastric tubes within their practice. The goals for this course include:

  • Demonstrate the knowledge and technical skills necessary to safely manage adult patients who need NGT insertion as part of the care plan
  • Reduce complication from misplaced and mismanaged NGTs in adult patients

Target Audience

All new clinical trainees (incoming GME interns) entering Geisinger Health System who care for only/primarily adult patients and who may need to insert nasogastric tubes within their practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to...

  1. identify indications and contraindications for placement of NGT in adult patients.
  2. demonstrate proper NGT placement in adult patients in a simulated environment.
  3. identify NGT placement complications in adult patients.
  4. interpret NGT placement on radiographic images in adult patients.
