Motivational Interviewing, Shared Decision Making, and Behavior Change - May 5, 2026

Danville, PA US
May 5, 2026
This is an in-person educational activity. This continuing education activity is designed to equip physicians and advance practitioners with the communication skills and strategies – specifically, motivational interviewing and shared decision-making skills – that are important in working with patients when the objective is to try to catalyze some health-related behavior change in those patients. A salient example (and one that will be a focus of this activity) is vaccine hesitancy or reluctance on the part of adults as well as the parents of minors. Given the growth of the phenomenon of vaccine hesitancy within our own patient populations, learners should attend this session to optimize their efficacy in aligning patient behaviors with their own best interests, as well as the interests of public health.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, nurses, and pharmacists in outpatient/community practice, including pediatrics. Other learner groups such as any other learner that utilizes motivational interviewing during their clinical practice would also benefit from this education.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Identify specific motivational interviewing and shared decision-making skills and techniques useful in communicating with patients about health-related behavior change
  • Effectively utilize specific motivational interviewing and shared decision-making skills in simulated encounters with standardized patients
