Radiologically Contaminated Patient Training - April 8, 2026

This is an in-person educational activity. Learners will gain an understanding of how to respond to and protect themselves when a radiologically contaminated patient presents to the hospital. Learners will also receive education on how to appropriately decontaminate and provide care to a radiologically contaminated patient.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurses, and Pharmacists.  Other learner groups such as Facilities, Health Physics, Radiology Technologists, Nursing Assistants, Environmental Services, Laboratory, Supply Chain, Security, and Corporate Communications would also benefit from this education. 

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • locate and describe the nuclear power plant emergency plan information and Geisinger radiological response plan
  • describe what radiation is, the types of ionizing radiation, and the difference between radiological exposure vs contamination
  • implement current treatment pathways, medical countermeasures, and decontamination procedures for radiological exposure, contamination, and cutaneous radiation injuries
  • demonstrate appropriate PPE Donning/Doffing and patient packaging techniques for minimizing contamination

Attendance
Attendance will be recorded within three to four days of the conclusion of the activity.  Credit will display on your continuing education transcript once the activity evaluation is completed.
