Learning Objectives: 

At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 

• Differentiate agitation driven by delirium, dementia-related neuropsychiatric symptoms, TBI-related dysregulation, intoxication/withdrawal, pain, akathisia, catatonia, mania, and primary psychosis.
• Apply a stepwise approach: immediate safety, focused medical assessment, de-escalation, environmental modification, medication selection, monitoring, and reassessment.
• Identify pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions based on clinical population, neurologic vulnerability, QTc/respiratory risk, route, onset, and target symptom.
• Discuss agitation treatment using clear target symptoms, rationale, risk-benefit considerations, monitoring, and deprescribing or reassessment plans.
