At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 

  • Delineate the pericardial anatomy and explain what causes pericardial fluid to form.
  • Breakdown the different degrees of severity of pericardial effusions and how to properly quantify.
  • Explain what causes cardiac tamponade and the echographic findings and/or characteristics associated with tamponade.
  • Provide imaging tips to cardiac sonographers when evaluating for cardiac tamponade.
  • Treatment of cardiac tamponade.
