Vital Talk: Breaking Bad News and Goals of Care Communication Workshop

This full day workshop is intended to provide you the skills to face common communication issues and challenges in caring for patients with advanced illness.  Our goal is to help you develop new skills and solidify old ones so that you are more effective in breaking bad news and exploring end of life care decisions. The course involves a mixture of didactic lectures, small group discussions and time to practice the skills with patients and families.
 

Target Audience

 This activity is intended to train Clinicians, Physicians Nurse Practitioners and Physicians Assistants to give bad news and match treatment recommendations to individual goals in the setting of advanced illness. 

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • construct a Headline prior to speaking to patient/surrogate
  • implement Ask-Tell-Ask framework of communication
  • demonstrate empathy using N.U.R.S.E. mnemonic skills
