Pediatric Sexual Assault Review Course

This is an in-person educational activity. This course provides a comprehensive review of the sexual assault examination process for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs). Designed for both new and experienced practitioners, the program reinforces core competencies in trauma-informed care, forensic evidence collection, documentation standards, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Participants will explore best practices for conducting medical-forensic evaluations, maintaining chain of custody, and supporting patients with compassion and professionalism. Through case-based learning and clinical guidance, this review prepares SANEs to deliver high‑quality, survivor‑centered care while meeting legal and professional practice requirements.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for registered nurses who will participate in the SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner) program at Geisinger.  

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • review the PA guidelines for pediatric/adolescent Sexual Assault
  • improve understanding of trauma informed care for children and adolescents
  • identify normal and abnormal anatomy and exam findings on children and adolescents
  • discuss the proper approach to interacting with children/adolescents who have experienced sexual assault
  • discuss peer review practices for children and adolescent SA exams

Attendance
Attendance will be recorded within three to four days of the conclusion of the activity. Credit will display on your continuing education transcript once the activity evaluation is completed.
