Just Culture Training - February 7, 2025 - Scenario

February 7, 2025

This is a virtual educational activity. Just Culture is a culture that holds organizations accountable for systems they design and for how they respond to healthcare professionals' behaviors fairly and justly. It recognizes that individual employees should not be held accountable for system failures over which they have no control. It is a matter of promoting a culture where healthcare professionals at any level feel safe to report error that impact the safety of a patient. The focus is not on blame, but transparency by balancing the need for an open and honest reporting environment with a quality learning environment and culture. Geisinger Health System is moving to and believes in a “Just Culture” that improves and encourages the reporting of patient safety events and concerns and discussed openly. It is known that the vast majority of errors in healthcare result from inadequate design of systems processes, simple human error or behavioral choices. The Just Culture Educational Series provides an opportunity for management and employees learn to eliminate processes inconsistent with Just Culture by providing them with supportive materials on how to respond to situations. The health system’s goal is to remove the fear and reality of blame associated with reporting these unintended errors while holding people accountable for reckless and malicious actions. The respect demonstrated in a Just Culture is an essential for staff trust and engagement, requisite for comprehensive error reporting, continuous improvement, and high organizational performance.
