Interprofessional Communication and Conflict Workshop - November 3, 2025

Wilkes-Barre, PA US
November 3, 2025
This is an in-person educational activity. This workshop on interprofessional communication and conflict consists of:
(1) brief didactic components (i.e., on empirical studies and findings concerning the importance of effective interprofessional communication in health care; on guidelines for responding to disrespect and fostering respect; and on conflict resolution strategies and skills), interspersed with
(2) interactive, participant-engaged components (i.e., reflecting on the experience of effective and ineffective communication within and across teams)
(3) culminating in a Boalean (Forum) Theater segment comprised of several clinical scenarios involving ineffective interprofessional communication and conflict enacted by actors from the Healthcare Communication Program.
With the scenarios, participants will be challenged to formulate communication strategies “in the moment” and to enact them to “test” their viability as responses.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians (allopathic and osteopath) from all specialties: nurses, pharmacists, advanced practitioners, psychologists, respiratory therapists, care managers - i.e. members of most disciplines/specialties engaged in caring for patients, as well as resident-level learners from these disciplines.  Other learner groups such as health care administrators and leaders would also benefit from this education.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • describe the need and evidence-based rationale for - as well as challenges in - improving interprofessional communication
  • identify communication skills and strategies for responding to disrespect, demonstrating respect, and resolving conflict
  • apply these skills and strategies after practicing in structured opportunities
