Hospital Incident Command System Training - March 3, 2026

This is an in-person educational activity. Learners will gain an understanding of how to respond to an Emergency Operations Plan Activation and the fundamentals of the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) used by Geisinger to respond to all-hazard emergency and disaster events. Learners will also receive education on how their role may change during an emergency or disaster to meet the needs of the incident within defined roles and responsibilities under the Hospital Incident Command System to ensure patient, staff, and visitor safety and reduce the potential for harm through emergency or disaster mismanagement.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for Physicians (Allopathic & Osteopathic), Physician Assistants, Nurses, and Pharmacists. Other learner groups such as Respiratory Therapist, Health Physics, Radiology Technologist, Administrators, Clinical Leaders, Facilities, Nursing Assistant, Environmental Services, Laboratory, Supply Chain, Security, Corporate Communications. Training is open to all Geisinger staff. would also benefit from this education. 

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • identify and describe the principles, structure, and core components of the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS)
  • explain and differentiate the roles and responsibilities of HICS positions and their application within Geisinger’s
    emergency management framework
  • demonstrate the ability to activate, establish, and operate a HICS Command Center in response to an incident impacting
    Geisinger
  • apply and evaluate HICS principles during a tabletop exercise by performing an assigned Command Center role to
    support incident objectives

Attendance
Attendance will be recorded within three to four days of the conclusion of the activity.  Credit will display on your continuing education transcript once the activity evaluation is completed.
