This is an in-person educational activity. Pediatric Fundamentals of Critical Care Support is designed to train the non-intensivist who works with children to recognize critical illness and initiate the appropriate care for a critically ill child. It is meant for anyone who works with or has the potential to work with critically ill children to improve comfort with this population and improve outcomes for critically ill children.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for all healthcare providers who participate in patient care at all levels where there is a possibility of patient’s clinical status worsening acutely of presenting with serious illness. Other learner groups such as paramedics and prehospital responders would also benefit from this education. 

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • apply A-B-C-D-E (airway, breathing, circulation, disability, exposure/environment) approach to initial resuscitation and rapidly identify external bleeding
  • use the knowledge of the unique anatomic and physiologic differences between pediatric and adult patients to identify critically ill children
  • identify unique anatomic and physiologic variables in the management of the pediatric airway
  • review the emergent neurologic assessment of the pediatric patient
  • describe the benefits, appropriate uses, and side effects of commonly used sedatives, analgesics, and neuromuscular blocking agents

Attendance will be recorded within three to four days of the conclusion of the activity.  Credit will display on your continuing education transcript once the activity evaluation is completed.

    The GEMS Center in located on the west end of the Geisinger Medical Center campus in Danville, Pa., and is housed in two separate buildings:

    The GEMS Simulation Center is in the former Interim Lab Building (ILB). It is a small yellow brick building directly to the left of the annex. It contains three high-fidelity simulation rooms with attached control/observation rooms and a combination thirty-person classroom/task training room.
