Family Medicine Outpatient Procedural Training Day

Scranton, PA US
April 11, 2026

Family Medicine Outpatient Procedural Training Day is a dedicated CME day for family physicians. This activity will offer hands‑on training in essential outpatient procedures, allowing clinicians to learn new techniques or refresh skills they may not use routinely. Through guided practice and expert instruction, participants can rebuild confidence and increase their comfort level with procedures that enhance comprehensive primary care. The goal is to empower physicians to re-incorporate these services into their outpatient practice, improving access and continuity of care for their patients.  Procedures will include 6 stations as follows:

  1. Nexplanon Insertion and Removal

  2. Toenail Removal

  3. Shave/Punch Biopsies

  4. IUD Insertion and Removal

  5. Shoulder Injections / Trigger Point Injections

  6. Knee Injections / Trigger Finger Injections

Target Audience

This activity is designed for family medicine faculty including advanced practice providers, residents and medical students.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Improve procedural confidence and competence: By the end of the session, participants will be able to demonstrate proper technique and increased confidence in performing common office-based procedures including Nexplanon insertion/removal, IUD insertion, toenail removal, skin shave and punch biopsies, and musculoskeletal injections (shoulder, knee, trigger-finger, and trigger-point injections).
  2. Apply evidence‑based indications, contraindications, and complication management. Participants will be able to identify appropriate indications, contraindications, and early complication signs for contraceptive implants and IUDs, dermatologic biopsies, and joint or soft‑tissue injections, ensuring safe integration of these services into outpatient practice.
  3. Perform procedures using correct anatomical landmarks and sterile technique. Participants will demonstrate the ability to locate key anatomical structures, use sterile technique, and employ correct procedural steps for toenail removal, joint injections, and soft‑tissue injections—improving accuracy and reducing complication rates.
  4. Integrate procedural care into routine outpatient workflows. Learners will be able to incorporate efficient procedural workflows, including patient selection, consent, preparation, after‑care instructions, and documentation templates, to support re‑implementation of these procedures within their own practice settings.
  5. Utilize hands‑on simulation to reinforce technical skills and reduce performance gaps. Participants will engage in guided simulation and supervised practice to address procedural skill decline—an issue documented in current family medicine research showing decreased procedural performance among family physicians—thereby improving real‑world readiness.
