The Empathy Paradox: Beliefs, Biases, and Our Emotional Responses
Enduring - This is a virtual, asynchronous educational session that is part of the Center for Faculty and Professional Development’s Foundations in Medical Education series.
Foundations in Medical Education offers participants an opportunity to attend a live, virtual one-hour session that focuses on one of following four foundational topics in medical education: learning theory, clinical teaching, classroom teaching, and assessment and evaluation.
Target Audience
Residents & fellow PDs, APDs, faculty & coordinators, medical students, clerkship directors & coordinators, clinical staff, advanced practitioners, CE activity directors, faculty & organizers.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- define the concepts of sympathy, empathy, and compassion
- recognize the sub-categories that can be attributed to empathy
- understand how our emotional empathic responses could impact the way we train our learners, and treat our patients
- recognize the impact of our beliefs, and implicit biases on how and with whom we empathize
- demonstrate strategies to improve their understanding of humanism and kindness to develop a compassionate approach towards others
