Cultivating Communities of Practice in Health Professions Education
Enduring - This is a virtual, asynchronous educational session that is part of the Center for Faculty and Professional Development’s Foundations in Medical Education Grand Rounds series.
Diane Nguyen, PharmD, is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and the Huffington Department of Education, Innovation, and Technology at Baylor College of Medicine, and the Associate Director of the Center for Research, Innovation, and Scholarship at Texas Children’s Hospital. She is also the Co-Founder of the Network of Practice in Health Sciences Scholarship and Flourishing Nexus, LLC. Dr. Nguyen’s expertise spans bridging knowledge gaps in resource-limited settings, designing continuing professional development initiatives, and championing interdisciplinary approaches to healthcare. With over a decade of global health leadership, her work has extended to 17 countries across Africa, Eastern Europe, South America, and the Pacific Islands, where she has focused on uplifting marginalized communities—particularly women and children—by strengthening the health workforce. Her recent honors include the 2024 ASPIRE to Excellence Award for International Collaboration in Health Professions Education, recognizing her impactful contributions to global medical education and workforce development. Dr. Nguyen earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, followed by post-graduate residencies in Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Practice and Public Health. Frequently serving as the sole pharmacist in diverse clinical environments, she developed a passion for uniting health and education—ultimately advocating collaborative, interdisciplinary solutions.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for physicians, advanced practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, psychologists and social workers. Other learner groups, such as. residents, fellows, medical students, non-clinician educators, GME program administrators and other education staff would also benefit from this education.

At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Describe the role of Communities of Practice (CoP) in health care
- Analyze how modes of belonging to a CoP contribute to its sustainability
- Discuss the diverse forms of value created by a vibrant CoP
