Breaking Bad News and Goals of Care Powered by Vital Talk

This is a live, in-person educational activity. Vital talk training targets clinicians who work with serious illness and make critical decisions with patients.  This full day course involves a mixture of didactic lectures, small group discussions and time to practice the skills with patients and families.   

Target Audience

 This activity is intended to train clinicians, physicians nurse practitioners and physicians assistants to give bad news and match treatment recommendations to individual goals in the setting of advanced illness. 

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • construct a Headline prior to speaking to patient/surrogate
  • implement Ask-Tell-Ask framework of communication
  • demonstrate empathy using N.U.R.S.E. mnemonic skills
  • build proficiency in using the REMAP tool for complex conversations re: end of life goals of care
