Central Line Course: Prework
Successful completion of the Central Line Course is required for all residents and fellows who insert central access devices as part of their training. However, there is an option to test-out of the course for select programs.
All fellows AND residents entering the programs listed below:
- Diagnostic Radiology Residency
- General Surgery Residency - Central
- General Surgery Residency - Northeast
- Interventional Radiology Residency - Integrated
- Neurology Residency - Central
- Vascular Surgery Residency - Integrated
The prework must be completed by April 13, 2026.
The results of the prework will determine your eligibility for the test-out skill assessment. To qualify for the test-out, you must:
- have practical experience with central line placement, and
- score a 68% (17 out of 25) or higher on the knowledge assessment.
If both criteria are met, you will be scheduled for a test-out skill assessment in our simulation center. If you demonstrate proper technique for ultrasound guided central line insertion, as assessed by one of our simulation faculty, you will be exempt from the full in-person session. If you do not meet both criteria above or if you fail to demonstrate proper technique during the test-out, you will be required to attend a full in-person session.
All residents entering the programs listed below:
- Anesthesiology Residency
- Emergency Medicine Residency - Central
- Emergency Medicine Residency - Northeast
- Internal Medicine Residency - Central
- Internal Medicina Residency - Northeast
- Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency
- Neurology Residency - Northeast
- Neurosurgery Residency
The prework must be completed one week prior to your session date.
