Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to:

  • Identify Common Pediatric Bone Fractures: Students will be able to recognize and differentiate between common types of pediatric bone fractures, including greenstick fractures, buckle fractures, physeal fractures, and growth plate injuries.
  • Understand Mechanisms of Injury: Students will gain an understanding of the mechanisms of injury that commonly lead to pediatric bone fractures, including falls, sports-related injuries, motor vehicle accidents, and child abuse. They will learn how different mechanisms of injury can affect fracture patterns and severity.
  • Assess Fracture Severity and Treatment Options: Students will learn how to assess the severity of pediatric bone fractures using clinical evaluation, imaging studies (such as X-rays and MRI), and classification systems (e.g., Salter-Harris classification). They will also explore various treatment options, including conservative management (such as casting and splinting) and surgical interventions (such as closed reduction and internal fixation).
  • Recognize Complications and Management Strategies: Students will be able to recognize potential complications associated with pediatric bone fractures, such as growth disturbances, malunion, nonunion, and neurovascular compromise. They will learn how to monitor patients for signs of complications and implement appropriate management strategies to prevent or address them effectively.
  • Appreciate Age-Specific Considerations: Students will develop an appreciation for age-specific considerations in the management of pediatric bone fractures, including differences in bone physiology, healing potential, and treatment approaches across different age groups (e.g., infants, toddlers, school-age children, adolescents). They will understand how to tailor treatment plans to meet the unique needs of pediatric patients based on their developmental stage and growth potential.
