At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 

  • Define Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS)/Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS) and describe the constellation of symptoms.
  • Review the history and epidemiology and summarize health care costs associated with NOWS.
  • Explain the pathophysiology of opioid withdrawal.
  • Describe the current approach to evaluation of infants with NOWS and discuss limitations.
  • Contrast nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic management strategies for infants being observed for NOWS.
  • Analyze growth trends in the neonatal period for infants affected by NOWS.
  • Review current nutritional management strategies for infants being observed for NOW.
  • Discuss current research at Geisinger JWCH newborn nursery on nutritional management for neonates being observed for NOWS.
