Learning Objectives: 

At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 

• Review the physiology of fetoneonatal transition to extrauterine life and the dependency of cardiopulmonary circulation on activation of pulmonary biomechanics
• Discuss the pathophysiological impact of uncoordinated umbilical cord disruption on the placental-neonatal circulatory unit, particularly with regards to cerebral perfusion and oxygenation
• Describe best practices that coordinate pulmonary biomechanical activation with placental-neonatal circulation, resulting in physiologic approach to cord clamping which optimizes neonatal outcomes
• Evaluate evidence on the benefits and adverse effects of umbilical cord milking as an alternative to physiologic umbilical cord clamping
