Learning Objectives: 

At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 

• CSA can occur by itself or in combination with OSA
• Sleep-related withdrawal of ventilatory drive is common to all forms of CSA
• Pathophysiology is somewhat heterogeneous among various types; e.g hypocapnic vs. hypercapnic vs. hypoxic
• Increased loop gain and crossing the apneic threshold is a common feature among hypocapnic forms of CSA
• Chronic intermittent hypoxia alternating with arousals presumed to elicit cardiovascular consequences
• Heterogeneity probably results in lack of single effective therapy for various forms of CSA
