This is an in-person educational activity. The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program® educational course provides didactic, video and conversational opportunities to learn about post-resuscitation care of sick and premature newborns prior to transport of the infant to a higher-level Intensive Care Nursery. Reaching healthcare providers of many disciplines, the S.T.A.B.L.E. Program provides learners with a universal platform to develop, organize, and carry out a systematic method of assessment and stabilization skills to ensure the sick newborn patient has the best opportunity for good outcomes. Health care providers responsible for the initial management of these sick patients can use this activity to provide a framework of skills covering several key components, including glucose management, thermal regulation, and respiratory management, among others. A separate but REQUIRED, online pre-course, S.T.A.B.L.E. Foundations, must be completed by all learners more than 48 hours in advance of in-person course to qualify for participation. *NOTE: Learners or their respective departments will be responsible for purchasing or supplying a 7th edition S.T.A.B.L.E. Program textbook for course use.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for Perinatal, Pediatric and Emergency Physicians, and OB Nurses.  Other learner groups such as respiratory therapists, EMS pre-hospital providers, emergency department and obstetrical technicians, medical and nursing students would also benefit from this education. 

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • identify infants at risk for hypoglycemia; monitor for signs of, treatment for, and post-treatment reassessment for hypoglycemia
  • identify physiologic responses to hypothermia for term and preterm infants
  • state indications for assisted ventilation and initial steps in ventilatory support
  • explain physical examination to evaluate for shock
  • state risk factors that predispose an infant to infection and the clinical signs of sepsis
  • identify ways health care providers can support parents of sick infants

In the unusual circumstance that this course is cancelled, you will be called and/or emailed, and any tuition fees received would be refunded in full.  Geisinger is not responsible for any airfare, hotel or other costs incurred.
 
Attendance
Attendance will be recorded within three to four days of the conclusion of the activity.  Credit will display on your continuing education transcript once the activity evaluation is completed.
