At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Define Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS)/Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS) and describe the constellation of symptoms.
- Review the history and epidemiology and summarize health care costs associated with NOWS.
- Explain the pathophysiology of opioid withdrawal.
- Describe the current approach to evaluation of infants with NOWS and discuss limitations.
- Contrast nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic management strategies for infants being observed for NOWS.
- Analyze growth trends in the neonatal period for infants affected by NOWS.
- Review current nutritional management strategies for infants being observed for NOW.
- Discuss current research at Geisinger JWCH newborn nursery on nutritional management for neonates being observed for NOWS.
