This is a live educational activity.  Pediatric Fundamentals of Critical Care Support is designed to train the non-intensivist who works with children to recognize critical illness and initiate the appropriate care for a critically ill child. It is meant for anyone who works with or has the potential to work with critically ill children to improve comfort with this population and improve outcomes for critically ill children.  
 

Target Audience

This activity is designed for all healthcare providers who participated in patient care at all levels where there is a possibility of patient’s clinical status worsening acutely of presenting with serious illness, such as, physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists and respiratory therapists.  Other learner groups such as Paramedics and or Prehospital Responders would also benefit from this education. 

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 

  • apply A-B-C-D-E systematic approach to pediatric trauma care
  • discuss the anatomic and developmental characteristics of infant’s and children’s airways
  • describe the key components of high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • review anatomic and physiologic differences between pediatric and adult patients
  • recognize early signs and symptoms of critical illness

    1. Cardiopulmonary Dysfunction

    Describe the management of children with cardiopulmonary deficiency, including the initial assessment and importance of rapid detection and intervention.

    1. Mechanical Ventilation

    Describe the indications for initiation of mechanical ventilation. Modify the ventilator prescription in response to patient data. Assemble the equipment necessary for NPPV. Practice techniques of NPPV
