At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 

• Describe the core principles of mastery learning and simulation-based education, including deliberate practice, feedback, performance expectations, and progression toward competence.
• Examine how active learning experiences, such as an escape room or scavenger hunt, can support teamwork, problem solving, and learner engagement.
• Design a simulation scenario that aligns learning objectives, learner needs, clinical context, assessment strategies, and debriefing plans.
• Explain effective approaches for working with standardized patients and learners in simulated-based education. 
• Use debriefing strategies to promote reflection, identify performance gaps, and support deeper learning.
• Apply simulation and structured debriefing concepts through guided practice and discussion.

Session Description:  This session immerses participants in mastery learning and simulation-based education through applied, experiential learning at the GEMS Center. Participants will begin with microteaching, providing an opportunity to practice teaching skills and receive feedback in a supportive setting. The session will then introduce key concepts in simulation-based education, including mastery learning, deliberate practice, feedback, performance expectations, and progression toward competence. Through the simulation escape room and scavenger hunt, participants will explore how active learning experiences can support teamwork, problem solving, and learner engagement. Participants will then apply these concepts in a scenario design workshop, developing simulation experiences that align learning objectives, learner needs, clinical context, assessment strategies, and debriefing plans. The afternoon will focus on working effectively with standardized patients and learners, followed by strategies for debriefing that promote reflection, identify performance gaps and support deeper learning. Throughout the day, participants will connect simulation, structured debriefing, and mastery learning principles to their own teaching and curriculum development work.
