Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Explain the principles of simulation-based education and its integration into curriculum design.
- Describe how mastery learning principles enhance simulation-based education and support learner competency.
- Identify appropriate target learners, learning gaps, settings, and simulation modalities for curriculum development. .
- Apply structured approaches to design a simulation scenario, including patient progression, critical decision points, and learner actions.
- Develop a curriculum framework that incorporates mastery learning principles, SMART objectives, and minimum passing standards. .
- Describe resource needs and implementation strategies for their curricular project.
- Incorporate evaluation and learner feedback into their longitudinal project.

Session Description: This immersive session centers on the principles of mastery learning and their application within simulation-based education. The morning begins in the simulation center with an interactive escape room experience, designed to guide participants through the foundational steps of curriculum design using mastery learning as a framework. Through this structured and engaging activity, participants will explore how simulation can reinforce key educational concepts and support deliberate practice. The session continues with a simulated clinical scenario, allowing participants to apply what they've learned in a realistic teaching context. In the afternoon, participants will review educational strategies that support mastery learning and meet again with their project mentors to refine and advance their curricular designs. This session emphasizes experiential learning and thoughtful curriculum planning, helping educators build confidence in using simulation to achieve high standards of learner competence.
