Presenter:

F. Daniel (Dan) Davis, PhD, Associate Chief, Clinical Ethics

Objectives:
  • Recognize Geisinger’s efforts to formulate learner-focused “standards of professionalism” within the relevant historical/conceptual context, i.e., the contemporary “professionalism movement” inaugurated in the mid- to late 1980s;
  • Describe the “structure” of Geisinger’s newly formulated standards of professionalism, i.e., professionalism is “lived out” in three relationships: (1) one’s relationship with oneself as a health care professional, (2) one’s relationship with one’s patients and one’s colleagues, and (3) one’s relationship with the community, and more broadly, society;
  • Begin to reckon with the implications of these newly formulated “standards of professionalism” for pedagogy, i.e., curricular and faculty development in medical education
