Learning Objectives: 

At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 

  • Describe the pathophysiological mechanisms by which diabetes affects ocular structures, including the retina, lens, and optic nerve.
  • Identify the key clinical manifestations of diabetic eye disease, such as diabetic retinopathy, diabetes macular edema, cataracts, and neurovascular glaucoma.
  • Differentiate between the stages of diabetic retinopathy (non-proliferative and proliferative) based on clinical and imaging findings
  • Explain the role of systemic factors (e.g., glycemic control, hypertension, lipid levels) in the progression of diabetic eye disease.
  • Interpret common diagnostic tools used in the assessment of diabetic eye complications, including fundus photography, OCT, and fluorescein angiography.
  • Discuss current management strategies for diabetic eye disease, including pharmacologic treatments (e.g., anti-VEGF therapy), laser therapy, and surgical interventions.
  • Evaluate preventive strategies for diabetic eye disease, including the importance of regular screening and early intervention.
