The 2025 Bioethics Symposium for Residents focuses on the theme of patient decision making capacity and the consequences of capacity assessments.
This is an in-person educational activity.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for residents.
Learning Objectives
The key learning objectives include enabling learners:
(1) to conduct and document a systematic assessment of a patient’s decision making capacity;
(2) to recognize clinical situations when the expertise of such specialists as neuropsychologists and/or psychiatrists may be important in difficult assessments;
(3) to recognize the consequences of determinations that a patient lacks decision making capacity in terms of Geisinger policy and important next steps; and,
(4) to work and empathize with, and effectively counsel surrogate decision makers for incapacitated patients.
