Objectives:

  • to understand the process by explaining how blood cultures are collected, processed, and reported in the lab
  • to Interpret results by teaching the audience how to interpret blood culture results, including timing, organism identification, and susceptibility patterns
  • to differentiate contamination vs. infection by providing tools to distinguish between contaminated cultures and true bacteremia
  • to manage positive cultures by discussing management strategies for common positive blood culture scenarios (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, gram-negative rods)
  • to apply knowledge practically by using real-world scenarios to reinforce decision-making
