At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 

  • Discuss V/Q matching and pulmonary mechanics during spontaneous breathing and while on positive pressure
  • Define the following terms:  Patient Self Inflicted Lung Injury (P-SILI); Stress and Strain; Pendelluft
  • Discuss the benefits and harms that spontaneous breathing can have during mechanical ventilation: provide clinical examples where benefit exceeds harm; provided clinical examples where harm exceeds benefits
