At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to: 

  • Discuss V/Q matching and pulmonary mechanics during spontaneous breathing and while on positive pressure
  • Define Patient Self Inflicted Lung Injury (P-SILI), Stress and Strain, and Pendelluft
  • Discuss the benefits and harms that spontaneous breathing can have during mechanical ventilation
    • Provide clinical examples where benefit exceeds harm
    • Provide clinical examples where harm exceeds benefits
